Various Kinds of Locks

There are locks galore if you do a search online or if you look the next time you’re in a store in the lock and security section. There are so many that it can be difficult to decide which one is best for you. This is especially true when there are so many kinds and brands. Whether you have a commercial or residential property, locks are important. Beyond that, they are mandatory. Without locks, you can’t enjoy peace of mind and trust that your property is secure. This is because literally anyone would just be able to walk in if you didn’t have locks, or if you have locks that do not work or are broken.

There are many types of locks but we are going to go over some of the most popular ones here…

Cabinet Locks. This kind of lock can be a good investment, especially if you have young children at home. Think about it – toddlers can get into everything. They crawl under things, they climb on top of things – and they get into cabinets! This can be scary if you have, say, cleaning products under the sink in your kitchen. You don’t want your child to open the cabinet and grab chemical cleaner! You don’t want them getting into certain places, and that’s where cabinet locks come in. They are certainly worth the purchase if you have limited space and can only store certain items in your bottom cabinets, which are otherwise easy to access by your children. Consider cabinet locks if you have kids, but these are also a good investment if you don’t have children!

Padlocks. This is a popular lock. It’s portable, which makes it stand out from other locks. These are available in various sizes. Padlocks are very convenient and can be seen on bikes, lockers, and even on doors and storage units. Their portability means they can go with you places, which might be important for you. There are different options, for instance, combination padlocks, which open with a dial. Keyed padlocks can be unlocked using a key.

Keyless Locks. Keyless locks have become very popular. People absolutely love the convenience that they offer. They like not having to use a traditional key for various reasons. Maybe you are the type of person who continuously misplaces things – it happens to the best of us! No matter how cautious you are, you just sometimes can’t remember where you left your glasses (even if they are on your head) or you can’t remember where your key ended up. So consider going keyless. This saves you from having to hold onto a key. It can also be convenient in the sense that if you rent a room in your house, you won’t have to change your locks if the person renting from you leaves. The same holds true if you own a business and an employee leaves. With keyless entry, you can just change your code. It is simple and saves money down the road.

Deadbolts. These locks are used for reinforcement generally-speaking or for larger doors that require extra security. What kind of deadbolt can you get? One is a single cylinder deadbolt. This is the type that is going to have a lock on the inside and outside. Unfortunately, a door could be unlocked without too much difficulty with this one. Double cylinder deadbolts have a key cylinder inside and outside. It has to be unlocked using a key from the inside. This can be beneficial in the sense that it makes a break in more difficult, but in an emergency, it can add stress. Another deadbolt type is the lockable thumb turn deadbolt. This is a single and double cylinder deadbolt, if you will, and offers extra security. The thumb turn inside is able to be locked with a key. A lockable thumb turn deadbolt is the best when it comes to the search for increased security and should be utilized if security is a concern.

Knob locks. This is the type of lock you are certain to find in someone’s home. They can be used on bathroom doors, for example, and they are a basic lock. Now, if your door opens to the outside of your property, rather than to the inside of your property (meaning a front door versus a bathroom door) then you ae going to want more than just a knob lock in place. A knob lock just isn’t enough for the exterior of a building or home. Why? For one, it could be easily manipulated by someone who wants to break into your property. The cylinder of the lock is situated inside the knob. What does this mean? Basically, that it can be broken and the lock cylinder can come off. You would want to use a knob lock in combination with another form of security.

Lever handle locks. This is a popular kind of lock often utilized in commercial settings. In order to open the door, the handle must be pushed down. If a person is handicapped, this can be easier to use. You might also see this kind of lock on a bathroom door.

These are the various kinds of locks, as you have now read about, that can be utilized in both commercial and residential settings, so it doesn’t matter what type of property you have.
